The Happenings: Three things to do in Vancouver on Thursday, February 15

Looking for something to do in Metro Vancouver? Here are three suggestions for Thursday, Feb. 15.

Walk the Moon

American rock band Walk the Moon may be best known for their 2014 hit Shut Up and Dance, which is still in regular rotation on the radio. It’s a very catchy song, which might explain how it made it into the top ten on the Hot 100, something bigger bands like the Foo Fighters and Muse have never done. Way to go, Walk the Moon! Anyway, I’m told they also have other songs — whole albums worth — and on Thursday, they’ll be performing several — a whole concert’s worth — at The Vogue. Walk the Moon is currently touring in support of their third major label release, What If Nothing.

Where: Vogue Theatre, 918 Granville St., Vancouver
When: 8 p.m.
Cost: $39.50

The Sheepdogs

The Sheepdogs

If it’s a Canadian rock concert you want though, forget Walk the Moon and check out The Sheepdogs up the street at the Commodore Ballroom. The Saskatoon band, one of the hardest-working groups in the biz, visits Vancouver Thursday in support of its new album, Changing Colours. (Very Canadian title. Love that superfluous “u”.) Changing Colours, released earlier this month, is the Sheepdogs’ sixth studio album and their first in three years. According to at least this one review, it’s a masterpiece, showcasing an expanded sound that incorporates the sounds of 70s psych rock, a genre that always sounds excellent in concert.

And if you can’t make it Thursday, the Sheepdogs have an encore performance at the Commodore scheduled for Friday night.

18th Annual Chutzpah! Festival: Ezralow Dance’s OPEN

The 18th edition of the Chutzpah! Festival gets underway Thursday night at several venues in Vancouver, and there’s something for everybody here: dance performances, theatre, comedy, and music, not to mention workshops by local and international artists. The opening night event is Ezralow Dance, as award-winning choreographer and multi-media artist Daniel Ezralow — known for his work in Julie Taymor’s Across the Universe, Cirque du Soleil’s Love, and the opening ceremony of the 2014 Winter Olympics — puts on a show at the Norman Rothstein Theatre.

Ezralow’s new show OPEN makes its Canadian debut Thursday, mingling contemporary dance with playful humour, striking visuals, and an unforgettable classical score. If you can’t make it, there are shows on Friday and Saturday as well.

Where: Norman Rothstein Theatre, 950 W 41st Ave., Vancouver
When: 8 p.m.
Cost: $29.50
