Government of Alberta sets up online petition with John Horgan as the target

The latest salvo by Rachel Notley and her Alberta provincial government in their inter-governmental battle with the B.C. government over Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline is an online petition.

The Alberta government has set up a “sign your name here” online petition on the provincial government’s website, looking to draw supporters in their efforts to push through the pipeline.

“The Government of British Columbia is trying to break the rules of Confederation, putting at risk the livelihoods of regular Canadians,” they say on the petition. Tell Premier Horgan and the B.C. government to stop standing in the way of working Canadians.”

“Tell Premier Horgan to keep Canada working.”

Last month, Horgan’s government announced they would restrict the movement of diluted bitumen until they are satisfied spills of the petroleum product can be safely cleaned up.

The petition points out that the federal government has previously approved the privately-owned pipeline as “it’s in our national interest.” The Alberta government insists the pipeline won’t lead to increased emissions and “comes with the strongest Climate Leadership Plan in the country.”

“By building this pipeline, we can diversify our export markets, stop selling our resources at a discount and start getting top-dollar. That matters. It matters for the schools our kids go to, the hospitals we rely on, and the public services we all use,” they go on.

A year ago, the provincial government approved the pipeline, after Christy Clark, Horgan’s predecessor as premier, secured a ground-breaking revenue-sharing deal.

In recent weeks both Jim Carr, the minister of natural resources, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have said that the pipeline will be built and several legal experts have said B.C.’s challenge doesn’t have much chance of succeeding.
